For my ethnographic movie, I will conduct interviews and research in depth more about the benefits and nuisances of a group text messaging app called GroupMe. I will target my Residence Life and Housing staffs in Turman Hall. Specifically, I would interview my RHD, who has created the group and needs to send the most announcements out on why using GroupMe rather than other social media messaging sites such as Facebook, Twitter, or even just emailing us. While sending us messages is very important, the receivers of the RHD’s messages, the RAs and SAs, are also crucial in interviewing to see whether GroupMe is a reliable and efficient method in sending messages out. Also, through seeing the functionality of the RHD using GroupMe, some RAs and SAs have created their own group for their own floors. Through this, we can see their feelings on both being a receiver and a sender of messages.
I will also look at researches made about GroupMe and see how others see the pros and cons of using such an app. By looking at such researches, we can see whether the Res Life staffs also can conclude to the same point. Through research, we can also be able to guage whether this app will be still used widely in the long run and see whether there are any faults or not enough excitement for the app to be used in the future.
In interviewing a specific group and seeing their reaction on using GroupMe and their report on the usefulness of GroupMe, it could help the general public in considering whether or not to use GroupMe. A relatively new app formed just a few years ago, GroupMe is already bought by Skype for an enormous amount of money. Through research, we will be able to see whether it was really worth being bought.
